Abstract
A urachal remnant is a rare congenital anomaly where the allantois extrudes into the umbilical cord during the early fetal period and remains either partially or totally open after birth, resulting in umbilical secretions and/or the formation of
a
lower
abdominal tumor.
We experienced a case of congenital patent urachus in a male infant. Fetal sonographic evaluation at 30 weeks gestation revealed the presence of a large umbilical cord cyst measuring 7.9¡¿7.2cm, with no other detectable abnormalities. So, serial
ultrasonic examinations were performed. After delivery, the neonate was admitted for evaluation of possible umbilical cord abnormality. Initial examination of the neonate showed a small cyst at the base of the umbilical cord in an otherwise
normal
looking male infant.
Patent urachus was confirmed through fistulogram. Surgical excision of urachal remnant was done and had an unremarkable postoperative recovery course.
